Byliner is unique for a number of reasons. First, the application provides avid readers with a place to discuss and discover titles. The other appealing aspect of Byliner is its underground nature. Visitors will find Byliner Originals that cannot be found elsewhere on the site. Users can also share titles and follow authors they like to help them promote their work.
The Byliner website is a brightly colored feast for the eyes. The site favors a vibrant yellow and plain grey color scheme alongside a pure white background. The layout is very well organized and easy to navigate, presenting the user with category options at the top of the page and the story lineup menu along the left hand side. Featured stories and spotlight titles are displayed on the homepage. Each title is listed with the summary, title and sharing tools presented right on the same page.
New users are not required to sign up or log in to browse Byliner’s collection of original titles and categories. Users who would like to access all features should click the pale colored “Sign Up!” button tucked into the upper, right hand corner of the page. The following page gives the user two registration options. A blue and white “Connect” button is positioned along the left hand side for users who prefer to register in one click through Facebook. Those who prefer to sign up the traditional way can provide their first and last name, email address and a password on the form at the center of the page. The user can sign up for Byliner notifications by clicking the box at the bottom of the form before clicking the orange “Get Started” button.
Byliner welcomes all users to create an account for free. There are no subscription requirements and the user never has to pay a fee to browse titles or participate in Byliner discussions. The user has the option of purchasing Byliner Original titles, most of which cost around $6 or less per title. This is not required to maintain a Byliner account.
